Being Out of Work for a Year Or More: 3 Simple Job Search Tips to Land a Job
If you’ve been out of work for a long time, you probably feel like the game is against you. Employers can kick you out before you even get to an interview – and it’s legal. Coming out of a recession is not an uncommon problem. And people often have other reasons for not working.
What to do to be taken seriously?
The problem has several aspects. An employer may think you have been out of work for a performance or work-related reason. They may be hesitant to give you a chance, based on the fact that no one else will give you a chance – fearing that other employers will know something negative about you.
An employer may also feel like you didn’t try hard enough, weren’t motivated, or weren’t willing to be flexible. They may think your work ethic is “probably” not that strong.
An employer may also consider you outdated in your field.
To be taken seriously, you must counter these impressions.
First, you need to take your job search seriously. This means that you need to network and keep your network of colleagues up to date on what you are doing to get a job. And that means you need a strategy. Your strategy will have steps to counter each aspect of the problem you are facing.
To counter the impression that you might have a performance problem at work, you need a story about why you are initially out of work. If your job loss was related to downsizing, this is your story. If you’ve changed careers, here’s your story. Or even if you had a problem at work, find a way to tell that story honestly and unemotionally. To say that you had a disagreement over the direction of the department is emotionless. To say that you had problems with your meaningless boss is moving.
To counter the feeling that you don’t want to be flexible or that you think your time is too valuable to spend on work, you need to show your willingness to work. You can do this with courses you have taken, self-taught or volunteer work. These are especially useful if they are in or related to your domain. A carpenter who would volunteer for Habitat for Humanity would demonstrate dedication and work ethic. An engineer who has volunteered to teach mathematics shows flexibility and motivation.
Educational credentials such as courses, certifications or even self-study can show dedication to work, discipline and also show that you have kept your edge and stayed up to date. Participating in forums and discussions in your field can help showcase your expertise. Work examples posted on LinkedIn can showcase expertise.
With a plan in hand, you must demonstrate that you have performed some of the steps in that plan. So second, make sure your resume and LinkedIn profile reflect the steps in your plan.. So, don’t just participate and hope you’ll be asked about courses or forums during your interview –– instead find a way to show off this work on your CV or in your profile.
Finally, learn to talk about your unemployment. Find a way to talk positively and upbeat about the steps you’re taking to become a better employee when you land the job. Such downtimes are rare in a field. You can and should use this time to be even more qualified than your competitors.
