We spend our lives being what we have become over the years.
Far from being the true character behind each of us, we are overlaid with the experiences we have had.
From the very first days when we have our parents, wishing us good luck every day, in their own way, they share with us and embody in us all the ways they have become.
It’s not their fault, it’s just their way of being, doing their best and instilling who they are in us. Good and bad. In fact, there is evidence to show that what they share with you is what their parents have shared with them and for previous generations. And you may be next in the cycle.
Then you go to school and your teachers give you some limiting beliefs (“You’ll never be good at math Julia”) and if you hear it enough, like the drip of water torture, you start to believe it and, hop, it doesn’t happen anymore!
And finally in the workplace; a partner; so-called friends, etc. everyone starts telling you that you can’t and you believe it. Because your behaviors stack with what you hear, you really start to follow your conversation. The way you heard it.
And Henry’s words ring true. If you think you can’t, you’re right! Well done! You’re stuck in your rut of low expectation of yourself and hey, you’re right, you can’t! Sometimes it’s even good to wallow in the “I can’t” syndrome – it’s easier than to raise your head and take a little risk (at least that’s what you were told said!).
So what if you looked for evidence and started challenging it? More often than not, the “evidence” is hard to find, if it ever was there. What if you wondered “What could it be if I could?” instead of living the “I can’t anymore” lie.
Make no mistake, you can rest assured that the drip of limiting your beliefs, imposed mostly by others, is hard to break. We get used to hearing it and believing it. And all of those moments sink a little deeper into your skin, until whatever patterns you’ve been told, you truly believe in them and find it hard to challenge them.
Believe that you CAN, because you can, no matter what anyone else tells you. After all, who said they were right anyway? And moving forward is so rewarding. Like a door opening, once you begin you will find many other opportunities that you have been hiding, perhaps unwittingly, begin to open up for you. “I can’t” suddenly pulverizes “I can” like you never would have expected.
Remember old Henry’s saying, whatever you think about yourself will be true, so let go of bad beliefs and who knows how far you might go. You might surprise everyone, including yourself.
