Multiplication – A Life Long Math Skill

Importance of multiplication for children

As soon as children enter third grade, they should be ready to learn a fundamental math skill, multiplication or times. Although multiplication is repeated addition, it is so important to children that they cannot succeed in math without it.

From kindergarten to second grade, children learn to add or subtract numbers without regrouping or with regrouping. Additionally, students are introduced to special concepts, such as two-dimensional and three-dimensional shapes. But the emphasis is still on addition and subtraction in lower grades, like kindergarten or first or second grade.

How to introduce children to multiplication?

To introduce children to multiplication or times, it is very very important that children understand basic addition very well. If a third grade student does not know simple additions such as “three plus eight” or “seven plus nine”, then this student is falling behind the average student and needs the help of parents and teachers to learn simple additions.

In other words, every third grader should know how to add two numbers less than ten. If the student is taking a long time to figure out the answer, they need more practice adding single-digit numbers.

Once children are very comfortable with adding single digit numbers (1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9), then they are ready to learn multiplication. Already I said that multiplication is just the repeated addition but it should be memorized by children, so that they don’t need to use the calculator for small calculations.

Parents can teach multiplication to their young children very easily. I give an example for this; consider that my daughter likes to play with dolls. I bought four dolls for her and she became very happy to have her favorite dolls.

I can’t stop there because I have done only one of my duties which is to make my beloved daughter happy because it is the duty of all parents to make their children happy by reasonable means . But who is responsible for giving my daughter a good quality education?

It’s me, isn’t it. Yes, parents also have a very important duty to educate their children well. So, while my daughter was playing with her new dolls, I asked her a question:

“How many dolls did you get today?” »

She replied, “Four.”

Then I asked, “How many arms does each doll have?”

“Two,” she replied.

“How many arms do all the dolls have together?” I asked her further.

“2…4…6…8, eight” she shouted after counting and adding numbers.

Then I told him about repeated addition that, 2 + 2 + 2 + 2 equals 8 or if we add two, four times, it gives us eight. Most children then respond to each other by being very excited, so 2 times 4 is 8.

Above is an example of hundreds of daily life activities to introduce children to multiplication. Once kids get familiar with the multiplication tables by two and three, they start to memorize all the multiplication tables, which makes math a lot easier for these kids.

Finally, don’t miss any opportunity to teach your kids basic math in your daily life. Once they learn basic math, higher math concepts such as algebra, geometry or trigonometry or even calculus will be within reach of your kids.
