How to Draw a Portrait Step by Step – Scaling Your Original Picture to the Right Size
So you managed to get yourself an image to draw from, it’s just the wrong size. Whether it’s too big or too small, here you’ll learn how to resize this original image to the right size for your design.
As you may have noticed, it’s remarkably difficult to do this freehand. You end up placing an eye that is slightly too big or in the wrong orientation, one side of the face ends up thinner and more misshapen than the rest…generally terrible things that neither you nor I want to happen.
What you want to do then is describe the whole thing first. Start with the darkest main features. Describe them. Slightly! You want to be able to erase them if it turns out to be wrong, and if they are correct you want to be able to draw them later when you get to actually drawing the rest of the image.
And each time you complete the outline, compare it to the original image. Compare it to everything you described. Are the proportions right? Will you have enough room around them to get the whole picture you want to draw?
If they are not, no worries! Erase them slightly and try again. Keep trying, over and over, until you get those proportions right. Don’t give up though! You’re just getting started and you don’t want to rush one of the most important steps in the process.
If you’ve ever tried drawing at a different scale, you probably already know from experience that a mistake in these proportions will ruin the whole picture when finished, even if you don’t realize it halfway through. .
And then all that effort, all that time, wasted… horrible feeling, I know. That’s what we try to avoid! So take your time for this. Hell, even grab a ruler and measure the original stats, then measure yours and see if they scale correctly! I know it’s art, but that doesn’t mean using a little math is wrong.
And once you get it right, do lots of clear outlines of everything. You are sure that the whole image will be correct, so you can start with the darker areas.
Remember, if you realize they aren’t dark enough, you can still make them darker later, no problem. IF you start with the light areas and accidentally make them too dark because you haven’t already done any dark areas to compare them to, then… you have a problem. Because the more you erase, and especially the more you have to erase, the worse the final image will be.
So remember. Describe first. Get your scale correct and make sure you are sure you can draw anything you wanted to draw.
Then start with the dark areas, slowly adding detail, shadows and depth to each of these features. and finally, make the areas lighter, using the dark areas you’ve already drawn, to compare them to, to make sure you have the right contrast.
